Let's delve into the reviews of single serve and pod coffee machines of 2020 one by one. They're ranked in no particular order.

1. Keurig K55 Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker - Best of the Best

This best-seller makes the best brew

When we crowned Keurig K55 ‘The Best’, we meant it in every sense of the word. It’ll make you one of the finest tasting coffee that your taste buds will be thankful for.

Keurig K55 Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker review

The 48-oz water reservoir doesn’t need frequent refills, and you can have 6, 8 or 10-oz coffee poured in just under a minute. The process could be a little noisy, but be rest assured that it’s worth it.

The quality of construction is top notch as well – which is expected. The machine is also versatile:

Allowing you to test out multiple flavors and make anything from tea to coffee to lemonade and just plain hot water!

The only problem related to this otherwise perfect coffee maker is found in the hoses. If used excessively for a couple of years, they tend to leak from the very place they clamp. This, however, can be sorted out by readily available replacement hoses.

Read our detailed review on Keurig K55

The Good

  • Simple and easy to use
  • Brews great-tasting coffee
  • Build quality is good
  • Highly versatile – can be used with multiple flavors

The Bad

  • A tad noisy
  • The hoses may stiffen over time

What's the Bottom Line?

With a best-seller badge, the Keurig K55 is a solidly built machine that will, with minimum effort, pour you mouth-watering coffee. It isn’t programmable, but that’s what makes it affordable. All in all, this is in fact the first option we’d recommend you buy if you’re in a mad rush to work every morning.

2. BUNN MCU Single Cup Home Coffee Brewer - Also Great

Don’t judge a coffee maker by its looks - BUNN MCU will show you why

BUNN is known for their industrial-looking coffee makers. Though they are not fancy to look at, and lack the bells and whistles boasted by our top pick, they’ll give you that perfect cup of coffee you’ve wanted.

BUNN MCU Single Cup Home Coffee Brewer

The multiple drawers that come with it are actually what set it apart. They are 4 of them: and each can be used for K-Cups, coffee pods, ground coffee and plain hot water.

Also:

The machine is easy to use. When the 14-oz water tank needs a refill, it’ll glow a red bulb and then go to green when it’s ready to set to work.

However:

Nothing can beat its speed. A scorching 8-oz cup of coffee can be poured at the press of a button in 42 seconds max. This, combined with the price and taste, alone make it worth a buy.

Hamilton Beach 49981A Single Serve

It isn’t as versatile as our top pick - and you can use only ground coffee.

However: That doesn’t mean you can’t customize your cup with the amount of water and the fineness of the coffee grounds.

Cleaning and using the machine too are as easy as one two three. But its durability is what will surprise you the most. Though the warranty is only for 1 year, it’ll live way past it without irking you.

The most common gripe is related to splashes when the coffee is poured into the cup. It can actually be avoided if you find just the right fit.

Ultimate Buyer's Guide for Single Cup Coffee Makers

If you’ve been on the lookout for a top rated single serve coffee maker for a while, you are where you need to be. Such a machine significantly simplifies the brewing process, so that the busy coffee enthusiast can enjoy this fresh beverage in less than a minute.

single serve coffee maker

A coffee maker is an important purchase. The coffee you drink each day is the lifeblood that gives you the energy to get things done. That being said, don’t rush your decision and make sure you consider the following features:

Timer

If you want to have a fresh cup of coffee waiting for you when you wake up each day, a timer is precisely what you need to make that happen.

Reservoir

Many machines have detachable reservoirs that facilitate maximum convenience. This makes the cleaning process much simpler.

Brew strength

Depending on the model of your machine, you can customize the brew strength of your drink, enabling you to prepare light or dark cups of coffee. As for basic models, the brew strength can be adjusted by just changing the size of the cup.

Water Filtration system

This is a rare feature. Nonetheless, the water you use has a considerable impact on the flavor of your daily beverage. On that note, using filtered water is recommended whether the machine comes equipped with a filtration system or not.

Temperature

Apart from the quality of the water, its temperature is just as important for preparing the perfect brew. Although the average coffee drinker won’t spot the differences, addicts such as you and I will, especially if you prefer drinking your coffee black.

So, if this feature matters to you, get a machine that allows you to customize the water temp.

Size

Similar to any other appliance in your kitchen, single serve coffee makers come in different sizes and shapes. If your counter space is minimal, there are space-effective machines designated just for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I prepare different drinks with a single serve coffee maker?

Yes; however, this will depend entirely on the capsule variety available for the machine you get. If this feature matters to you, make sure you consider the diversity of capsules compatible with the coffee maker.

  • How much does a single serve coffee maker cost?

The price for a single serve coffee maker varies from $75 to $500. Typically, it depends on the features of the machine. As a general rule, K-Cups are the most affordable disposable coffee pods. Also, expensive doesn’t necessarily equal high-quality.

  • How much do capsules cost?

The cost of the capsules is one of the primary expenses of owning a single serve coffee machine. In other words, you might be paying more per cup than you would if you had a traditional drip coffee maker.

Make sure you shop around to get a hint of what you’ll pay per drink. Remember that buying in bulk could save you money.

  • How fast does a single serve coffee maker brew a cup?

If you’re not the patient kind of coffee drinker – who is, really? – you might have this question. This also depends on the machine. However, a proper brew could take up to 45 seconds. It’s worth the wait if the result is as expected.

  • Does a single serve coffee maker have different brew strength options?

This is a pretty nice feature I personally enjoy having. It’s also useful if you like drinking a particular kind of coffee, but you’d rather alter its strength depending on your preference – the darker, the better.

To benefit from this feature, the machine should have a large water storage area from which the maker could determine the amount of water used for a cup.

A Few Final Words

We hope that this brief buying guide has been helpful. Without a doubt, nothing is better than starting your day off with a quick and aromatic brew.

If you have other questions on this topic, you can address them, as usual, in the comment section below. Until next time!

  1. Keurig K-Select are not what you and every one is saying, unless you buy water. If you are in an area that has hard water and use a softener the only model that supposable works is the K50. In all my research did I see this issue mentioned anywhere. Keurig only answer is buy water

    • I have Keurig 575, 2.0 brew system, for the past 4 months. Cant get rid of fast enough. Terribly noisy, always needs some type of maintenance. Has to be reset frequently due to clean needle, or pump malfunction. Do not recommend at all. I have tried many of these type coffee makers.. Cuisinart… the absolute best, for quality, looks and dependable. Had mine for 6 years used heavily. Now going to purchase another.

  2. I have the Keurig that is supposedly “the best”. It’s less than six months old and I’ve already gone back to my reliable drip coffee maker. What a waste of $100+. Never again will I purchase anything from Keurig. Their answer to the problem of the “water under pressure” warning is go to the website and read, or buy spring water or my personal favorite “service the machine weekly”. Thanks but no thanks. Their customer service was laughable and worthless…

    • I agree, Keurig is not the best in my eyes since I have gone through 2 different models, spending close to $400. Contacting mfg was not much help, did not want to hear about the problems. The trash ended up with mine. Bought a Cuisinart single serve, so far works wonderful.

  3. The Pixie ONLY makes espresso.
The Citiz and Milk has a heater/frother for other drinks, and because of this, is a better machine.

  4. When you mean programmable, it doesn’t automatically brew the coffee. It only means that it will warm up the water at specified time, but if you want to coffee itself, you still have to press the button.

  5. I had the Bunn MCU, this machine was awesome. So easy to use, love all the trays that are included. Tea was fabulous to make from it…using normal tea bags. Can’t say enough about this machine. I am thinking of purchasing another one…..

  6. A Keurig coffee maker is ideal for those that always complain about their coffee maker. I have had 4 different Keurigs, and they are consistently inconsistent.
I tried a couple of lesser known brands, before I found coffee heaven in the form of a Bunn MCU. It isn’t the prettiest, but if you’re looking for a brewer that is Consistent, very fast, compact, efficient and kudos and kudos, you can’t go wrong with the Bunn!
