Reviewing Maud’s Coffee Pods for Coffee Lovers

When it comes to coffee, we have all the rights to be picky.

For some, coffee is just that dark drink they consume every now and again for a caffeine kick – and it’s not as unhealthy as you may think. For others, coffee is something you drink for the taste – the aroma.

Let's dive right into the reviews.

PROS

  • It includes many pods
  • No bothering with the dosage
  • It has a rich and bold flavor
  • Allergen and dairy free

CONS

  • The lid may be fairly thin
  • Some may not feel that the aroma is strong enough

Those who love having a cup of dark coffee in the comfort of their own home may particularly enjoy this blend. Made from 100% Arabica coffee, these pods can be used on any kind of Keurig K-Cup brewer, including the ones marked with “2.0.”

The reason why I particularly like this blend is that it has a bold flavor without being particularly bitter. If you tend to drink your coffee without sugar or milk, then this might be a fairly convenient brew for you.

The pods, however, come in a variety of flavors – 12 in total – including chocolate, vanilla, almond, hazelnut, bananas, raspberry, and Jamaican rum. It’s a good option for those who want to add an extra kick of taste to their coffee.

The shape is fairly different compared to other pods, which is why it might not be compatible with every coffee brewer – so you might want to do some research before ordering for something other than a K-Cup, to make sure it works for you.

A box contains a total of 100 coffee pods (48 ct and 72 ct boxes are also available) – so you get your worth. If you’re a casual drinker and only drink one cup per day, then this box may last you three whole months. Even the most avid drinker will not have any issues with the coffee.

What's the Bottom Line?

Are you looking for a coffee with an intense aroma that you can drink sugarfree and prepare with a Keurig? If the answer is “yes”, then this selection is a good option for you.

PROS

  • You get a variety of rich flavors
  • Good price
  • Recyclable

CONS

  • Some connoisseurs may consider the taste mediocre
  • The coffee strength is not the same in all cups

When the caffeine intake is already high or when you simply can’t take caffeine, you might want to switch to a cup of decaf. The problem with most decafs, however, is that the taste is generally compromised – but from what I’ve seen, Maud managed to find a solution to this problem.

With this collection, you have 6 flavored decaf pods that you can enjoy to your own preferences. Furthermore, since it’s made from pure Arabica beans, the taste should not be compromised in any way. The flavors that you may choose from are as follows:

  • Sister Hazelnut – with a smooth flavor and a vanilla and hazelnut aftertaste
  • French Toast Roast – with a cinnamon base and a butter and maple syrup aftertaste
  • Gone Banana’s Fosters – with subtle notes of banana, vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar, and dark rum
  • Hottie Biscotti Vanilla Almond – with notes of toasted almond and vanilla ice cream
  • Jamaican Rum Yum – with notes of caramel coconut, vanilla, and sweet molasses.

These pods are compatible with various kinds of coffee makers, particularly the ones working with a K-Cup brewing system. The pods are for one-time use, but at the same time, they are recyclable. I generally turn them into compost material after drinking my morning coffee.

What's the Bottom Line?

If you cannot drink regular coffee but still can’t bring yourself to replace it with tea, then this decaf pack may be just the right choice for you.

Maud's 12 Flavor Coffee Variety Pack, 136 ct. Recyclable Single Serve Coffee Pods - Richly satisfying arabica beans California Roasted, k-cup compatible including 2.0

PROS

  • It includes a large number of coffee pods
  • Made from 100% Arabica
  • Strong aroma, variety of flavors

CONS

  • The lid is weak

Sometimes, 100 coffee pods may not be enough to take you into the next month – particularly if, like me, you are the kind of person to drink 3 or 4 cups per day. Considering that this one features 136 pods, it’s more than enough to keep you caffeinated for the rest of the day.

Having a variety of roasts (going from French roast to Pumpkin and Sumatran), this pack is perfect for those who like the variety. With pods that are compatible with K-Cup brewers, you can make coffee in the comfort of your own home.

I like the whimsical names of these blends, mixing different roasts under names such as Mona Lisa, Dunk Your Donut Shop, California Tan, or Organic Ethiopian. The strength of the coffee can be seen on the lid of the cup: the more bars it has, the stronger it will be.

What's the Bottom Line?

If you are a caffeine addict and the volume of coffee you drink per day is not for an average coffee drinker, then you might want to give this pack a try.

mauds half caff

PROS

  • Good for people that want small caffeine dosages
  • Rich and bold flavors
  • Large assortment and number of coffee pods
  • You can pick from stronger to weaker brews

CONS

  • The cups are flimsy
  • Some mixes may be mediocre compared to others

Some people want a full caffeine level, some want decaf – and others keep mixing through the coffee blend to get a semi-caffeinated version. However, the advantage of these blends is that you don’t have to mix them yourself. They half-caff everything from the very start.

These coffee pods are a good option if you want to cut down on the caffeine – but you don’t want to drink a watered-down coffee cup. This way, you still get a small dose of caffeine, while getting the rich taste of coffee.

Each pod contains a mix of two coffee blends: Mellow Mood Decaf and Tall Dark & Handsome. There is also a great variety of flavors to choose from, going from banana to chocolate and hazelnut.

However, if you’re like me and like to stick to the classic, flavor-free cups, then there are a few options for you in the pack as well.

What's the Bottom Line?

If you want to cut down on the caffeine but still aren’t ready to give up on it completely, then you may want to give the half-caff a try. I found it tasty, affordable, and perfect for anyone that likes a bit of variety.

mauds variety pack

PROS

  • A variety of flavor
  • Premium Arabica coffee
  • It contains both flavored and unflavored cups

CONS

  • Smaller pack
  • The cups’ lids are flimsy

Those who enjoy a little bit of variety will also like this blend pack. It contains not too many pods, nor too few – which is why I found it a good option if you drink one or two cups per day.

It’s also great if you don’t want to buy more than one pack per month.

Unlike most 100-count packs, this one only counts 80. Similarly, you have only 9 flavors to choose from, unlike the classic 12-flavor bunch.

These flavors include the American House blend, Tall Dark & Handsome Classic, Bubbies Breakfast Blend, French Roast, Mona Lisa Blend, Dunk Your Donut Shop, Dreamy Creamy Salted Caramel, Organic Colombian, and Espress-O Yourself.

The roasts go from light to dark, and I liked that you may choose them according to your preferences. It’s good for those who like to experience different strengths and flavors, but also for partners that have different tastes in coffee.

What's the Bottom Line?

Going for this pack will not cost as much as going for the bigger ones, so if you are tight on the budget, this selection may be the better choice for you.

mauds decaf mellow

PROS

  • A strong aroma
  • Good for those with heart conditions
  • A variety of flavors
  • A generous number of pods

CONS

  • The pods are flimsy
  • Some complain that the taste is mediocre

Once more, this is a good option for those who prefer a good decaf over getting continuously caffeinated. From what I could taste, the Mellow Mood is nuanced with berries and maple syrup but also gives off a chocolaty aftertaste.

This medium roast coffee has a rich aroma and depending on the pod that you choose, you may get multiple flavors. You can buy a pack that only has the standard flavor, or you can go for the one that has a variety of other flavors. It all depends on your preferences.

The pods are very easy to use and are also recyclable. Again, if you like to be eco-friendly and you prefer to compost your waste like I do, this pod permits you to do so.

What's the Bottom Line?

If you like decaf coffee but don’t particularly enjoy spending tons of money on a good brew, then you might want to consider this particular blend. I found it an affordable option, but also very tasty for a decaf.

PROS

  • A variety of flavors included
  • Organic, with no chemicals in the mix
  • A strong aroma
  • Affordable price

CONS

  • Some may think that four flavors are not enough

Those looking for some good single-origin coffee might want to give this pack a try. Containing a mix of organic coffee pods, the origins of these flavors are the following: Ethiopia, Guatemala, Sumatra, and Colombia/Mexican Select.

In my opinion, these blends are not as strongly flavored – which is why the pack is mostly suitable for those who like their coffee pure, without any additional flavors. I usually prepare it as a café lungo, or as a simple Americano – but you may choose whichever option you like.

The flavor, however, still runs in various strengths – from weaker to stronger. If you like to drink your coffee mild while your significant other likes it stronger, this pack allows you a certain degree of variety.

The Ethiopian pod is a dark, strong roast with tangerine citrus and jasmine aftertaste, making it perfect for those wanting something exotic. The Guatemalan mix, on the other hand, is a medium roast that has been infused with berries and bittersweet chocolate.

The Mexican Select and Sumatra are a bit on the sweeter side. The former has floral tones while the latter has smoky chocolate and sweet peppery tobacco taste. If you like your coffee sweeter but still prefer it sugarfree, this might be a good option for you.

The price is fairly affordable, and this selection is a good option if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on coffee pods.

What's the Bottom Line?

While just slightly flavored, I found this mix a good option for those wanting the original taste of coffee – sans the extra flavors. It’s affordable, it’s tasty, and it does a very good job at giving you an energy kick.

Final Thoughts

Depending on your coffee preferences, some roasts may work better for you than others. You may go for caffeinated products, or you may go for a good decaf. Similarly, you can go for the classic black coffee taste or you may go for the flavored version. It all depends on your preferences.

Thankfully, with Maud, you have a great number of assortments to pick from – regardless of your tastes. Hopefully, I managed to help narrow down your choices – allowing you to drink only the best blends.

  1. You didn’t mention that most, if not all, Mauds KCups are 11 grams if not more and can stand up to 12 ounces of water. I’m a happy customer. However, using my Bunn MyCafe machine, I have to push the KCup down on the pin.

  2. I have been drinking Mauds religiously for several years. Love the price, taste, and aroma. I am being forced to switch because I have had a number of “accidents” with the KCups. In my last two or three boxes of Kcups, the foil covers have not been totally glued to the cup’s top. When the hot water begins, it drips not only through the grounds, but also forces the top loose and grounds go everwhere–necessitating cleaning of the coffee machine and the table and nearby floor. I have tried a variety of ways to puncture the foil by changing the pressure of the downward stroke, to doing it by hand. Nothing guarantees that in a while, a foil cover will fail and I’ll have a mess to clean up. When I reported this to the company, they generously gave me a free replacement, but even that one had a half dozen failures of the foil tops. So–coffee’s great most of the time.

    • The same loose-top grounds spillage is happening to my latest box of Maud’s half-caff. They need to look into this.

    • How did you report to the company? I have a Keurig machine which does not fully puncture the bottom of The Tall Dark and Handsome Decaf pods. As a result, the grounds and water are forced back up to the top and eventually to the floor creating a real mess.
